Rail Roads in England.—A letter from an American gentleman in England, giving an account of the principal rail-roads in that country, has been recently published. It appears that the attempts to facilitate inter-communication, by their means, have been in the highest degree successful; and, in extent, utility and profit, already exceed the expectations originally formed. Limited at first to short stages, the Stockton and Darlington road now extends thirty miles in a straight line. A corps of Engineers have been engaged under the authority of the French Government, in making a survey of the road, with a view to the introduction of the system into France. Numerous rail roads have recently been constructed in almost every district in the middle and northern counties, but, especially, in the neighbourhood of the great manufacturing towns.

"Of all the systems hitherto invented," says the writer, "this affords the greatest security to persons and property;" and the rapidity with which transportation is effected, is without a parallel. The cost of repairs is represented as trifling, and, as evidence of the public confidence, it is stated that the Manchester rail road stock, upon which £71 per share has been paid, is selling for £52, and the Stockton, on which £100 has been paid, is selling for £130.

Besides, the writer is confident, that, notwithstanding the degree of perfection to which the system has already arrived, when submitted to the exercise of American ingenuity, "new and important facilities will be invented, tending still more to "it.""
