COTTON MILLS
COMING SOUTH.

There are very definite indications that practically all new industries established in the United States in the future will be located in the South. Already big eastern manufacturers of cotton goods have announced their intention of moving their mills from the East to the South.

Two reasons for this tendency to locate cotton mills in the South, rather than in the East, are that it places the mills near the source of supply for raw materials, and also enables the manufacturer to secure a higher class of labor at a reasonable cost—and there are many other reasons.

Americus may well note the movement in this direction as regard cotton goods manufacture, and take stock to determine the advantages that might accrue to us as a business center if a cotton mill should be brought here.

One of the primary business advantages of a cotton mill for Americus would be the pay-roll. There would be turned loose in Americus every week thousands of dollars from the weekly wages paid the operatives in the mills. This would be constant, and help to offset the periodical slumps in business that occur from time to time every year in a city having no industrial pay-roll.

Another advantage would be the increase in population and the consequent general stimulation of business and commercial enterprises of all kinds.

Also it would tend to give the farmers of this section a better price for their cotton. Freight costs on baled cotton would be eliminated entirely. The rich soil of Sumter county would produce enough cotton, even under present conditions, to supply many thousand spindles.

The problem of the unemployed would be solved in the main by such industries. Busy people are more contented and efficient than idle ones, and one of the greatest blessings that can come to any city is the possibility of a job to every man and woman who desires to work.

The textile industry has definitely turned toward the South, and it remains to be seen whether or not our city and section will get their share of the benefits that come from this movement.

The mills are to be had. It is up to the business men of Americus to find the way to attract them here, now that we shall very soon have a surplus of hydro-electric power to offer industrials.
