Dr. Lucky, who has been attending the Teacher's Institute at San Diego returned to the city yesterday. The Union of the 26th inst., has the following concerning the Doctor's lecture before the Institute and citizens Thursday evening:
The lecture last evening by the Rev. Dr. Lucky, before the Teacher's Institute, was of a high order, and we regretted that the Methodist Church was not crowded with hearers. It was unfortunate that the time for this lecture was during the holding of a meeting at Horton's Hall in regard to the exciting question of an election under the Local Option Law. But for this, Dr. Lucky would have had a very large audience. His subject was "The Teacher and His Auxiliaries," and he handled it with decided ability. He showed the wonderful influence which the teacher exerts upon society through the young minds and hearts which he impresses and educates. His position is one of the greatest dignity and responsibility. And he needs the best auxiliaries. It is lamentable that he receives so little help from others who should cheer and assist him. The principal auxiliaries which the teacher should have, Dr. Lucky enumerated as follows: 1st. An enlightened public opinion, which would furnish handsome and comfortable school houses, and supply them with everything that can facilitate teaching and make them attractive. 2d. A good board of trustees. 3d. The parents of the scholars. 4th. Physicians, who should occasionally visit the school-room and deliver a short lecture upon physiology, or give experiments in chemistry, or exhibit a microscope or some other instrument that would interest the scholars. 5th. The clergy. 6th. Lawyers and editors, and all other literary persons. Dr. Lucky showed how persons of each of these classes could become important auxiliaries of the teacher; and he urged upon all present to do their part in advancing the cause of education.
