New Action Brings Added Threat in Burma
LONDON, March 26 — (UP) — Strong Japanese forces pushed northward toward British defense lines in the Prome area today, adding a new threat to a serious allied situation in central Burma where Chinese troops still were trapped near Toungoo.
A Burma communique revealed the Japanese had launched a new drive toward rich oil fields near Prome, indicating that a mass assault against the allied right flank was imminent.
The enemy forces moving up the Irrawaddy River Valley already had passed Kyaukpyu, 30 miles south and slightly west of Prome, the communique disclosed.
A British military commentator described the Burma situation as "serious, but not momentarily critical."
He said the entire allied left flank, centered in the Toungoo area, would collapse unless well-entrenched Chinese forces trapped near Toungoo could dislodge Japanese forces which have succeeded in cutting the Mandalay road at two points above them.
Strong reinforcements of the Chinese 5th and 6th armies, rushed to the Toungoo sector by Lieut. Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell, were reported counter-attacking heavily.
