COLUMBIA S. C. Aug. 26,

Storm.—On Thursday night last we had a violent storm. Torrents of rain poured down from the black clouds which passed over us—the dazzling brilliancy of the lightening was fearful—the frequent and heavy peals of thunder appalling,

During a half hour the reverberations were continued at intervals and several heavily charged clouds exploded with great violence over our town. The Arsenal was struck—the conductor probably saved the building; the electric fluid passed down to the lower story, which it entered, throwing down some of the bricks of the wall, although the insulation of the conductor appeared perfect. In this room was two rows of mounted cannon—the fluid traversed the metal and iron mountings and passed off in four directions, having shivered an old carriage which had the iron taken off. The floor was scorched where the fluid passed off, and the doors somewhat splintered.

The Theological Seminary had a portion of the roof torn off, and a quantity of soot thrown down the chimney was ignited on the floor in the basement story—which being of brick prevented the extension of the fire.

A small store at the Bridge was somewhat injured but not seriously.

The house of Mr. S. Boatwright was struck, but the conductor prevented any injury. excepting to a few panes of glass which were broken by the shock. The concussion was felt by some of the family, and extended to our own dwelling opposite. Two persons were jarred and thrown down. and the lights in the lower story extinguished.

Several other places were struck but no material damage sustained.—Planter.
