The council and township trustees met in joint session on Thursday evening, May 11, at the council chamber with all members of both boards present with the exception of councilman Finkbeiner. The object of this joint meeting was to make the necessary levy for the continuation of the grading on the cemetery improvements. Mr. Simmons of the board of trustees introduced a resolution to make a one-half mill levy on all township property, real and personal, for cemetery purposes, which carried, after which the meeting adjourned.

Council then met in regular session with the Mayor and Clerk and all members present. The minutes of the last regular and intervening meetings were read and approved. The Mayor announced that George Munger had refused to qualify as a councilman, and he appointed C. A. Hoffmann to fill the unexpired term of Mr. Hanson, resigned. The Mayor appointed the following standing committees for the year: Finance, Finkbeiner and Degner; Judiciary, Hahn and Finkbeiner; Street, J. G. Hoffmann and Klingler; Sidewalks, Degner and C. A. Hoffmann; Cemetery, Klingler and Hahn; building and grounds, C. A. Hoffmann and J. G. Hoffmann. The marshal was instructed to notify C. A. Hoffmann of his appointment and the council took a recess until his arrival, when he was sworn into office by the Mayor. On motion of Finkbeiner, seconded by Hahn the appointment of the standing committees was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes-Degner, Hahn, Finkbeiner. C. A. Hoffmann and J. G. Hoffmann. Nays-Klingler. Carried.

It was stated that C. A. Denman, general manager of the T. & M. V. and T. B. G. & F. electric roads, would meet with the council at their next session, if he were unable to be present at this meeting, with reference to making improvements on streets occupied by electric lines. The marshal made his returns of notices served on owners of defective sidewalks. It being advisable to replace the gravel walk on Elm street between Second and Third streets with a plank walk, the judiciary committee was instructed to investigate if the walk now there was built in accordance with the sidewalk ordinance. This committee was also directed to ascertain if the two-foot walk on Cherry street, between Fifth and Seventh streets was in compliance with ordinance of specifications. The sidewalk committee was instructed to repair sidewalk at intersection of Indiana avenue and Cherry street. The street committee were instructed to make necessary repairs on the crossing at Elm and Front streets, also at junction of Seventh and Cherry streets. A bill for court costs in the wheel factory case was referred to the judiciary committee for investigation, with instructions to report at next meeting. The claim ordinance was then passed and council adjourned.
