KNOW YOUR NEWS AND VIEWS OF THE LOCAL YMCA
By ELLIOTT J. PIEZE
Beginning this week, and continuing regularly in the future this column will be brought to the readers of the Miami Times in order to give them a keener insight into the activities of the "Y", its importance in the community, what it means to them and what they can do to help make it a better "Y."
The purpose of the 'Y' is to develop Christian personality and build a Christian Society. In its work with young people, it has made a material contribution to our country's spiritual and moral life. The efforts of the "Y" to insure the future of our young citizens are justly deserving of our whole hearted support.
THE CURRENT "Y" DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The local George Washington Carver branch is now in the midst of a major development program, the ultimate aim of which is to provide this community with an adequate building to house the organization and its activities.
BOARD PLEDGES $10,000 TO PROGRAM
The committee of management and staff of the Carver "Y" has pledged more than $10,000 to the Greater Miami YMCA Development program.
The present objective of the YMCA is to obtain a site and build a club type social building for the George Washington Carver Branch. This would include: An all purpose room, recreation room, snack bar, club rooms, craft shop, lounge club room, offices, check room and kitchen.
However, if enough money is raised, residence rooms and physical department will be provided at the same time the first unit is built.
The members of the committee of management are Rev. E. T. Graham, chairman; Leo Armbrister, Henry Arrington, Alexander Brooks, Charles Butler, Shedric E. Carr, R. C. Coleman, Miss Helen Dorsett, D. A. Douglas, Mrs. Susan Harris, Judge Henderson, Geo. E. Hepburn, D. A. Julius, Eugene Kemp, Geo. Kelpatrick, H. Daniel Lang, Albert Miller, Earl Mizell, Herbert Munnings, Farley B. Neasman, Elliott Pieze, Garth Reeves, Rev. H. E. S. Reeves, Carl Rhetta, Arlington Sands, David Simmons, Jefford Smith, Mrs. I. R. Straughter, J. R. Taylor, Peter L. Thompson, Chas. L. Williams, Robbie W. Wright, and Robert Young.
The YMCA Development Program is a community project and thus a community responsibility. Individuals, businesses and others will be called upon to support this effort.
