ASHEVILLE HAD FIRST CLUB IN SISTER STATES

72 Units Now Active; District Has Won Many Honors

By R. H. McDONALD (District Secretary)

Kiwanis is fifteen years old in the Carolinas. The first club organized was the Asheville club, and the first man to sign an application to become a Kiwanian was Ed Greene of that club.

Since that time Kiwanis has been a driving force in the two states. In 1923 when your humble scribe assumed the duties of district secretary there were thirty-six clubs comprising the district. Today we have seventy-two live wide awake clubs serving their various communities in an effort "TO BUILD."

Paul Haddock of Charlotte was the first district governor. He was followed by Tom Arnold of Spartanburg, S. C., who later moved to New York, and he was succeeded by that loyal and lovable Kiwanian, W. B. (Buck) Merrimon of Greensboro, whose interest and enthusiasm in Kiwanis has never ended. Since 1923 the following have rendered distinguished service to the district as governors:

1923-Alva M. Lumpkin, Columbia, S. C.
1924-Harry T. Adams, Raleigh.
1925-Dr. E. W. Sikes, Clemson College.
1926-Felix Harvey, Kinston (deceased).
1927-James M. Lynch, Florence.
1928-Clarence R. Pugh, Elizabeth City.
1929-Tim Crews, Spartanburg.
1930-Allison Honeycutt, Hendersonville.
1931-Thos. P. Pruitt, Hickory.
1932-Herbert W. Hennig, Darlington.
1933—William H. Montgomery, Wilmington.
1934-Ralph C. Barker, Durham.
