WASHINGTON, March 24, 1853.—The resolution authorizing the Committee on Indian Affairs to detail one member of the committee to take testimony and investigate the charges against Governor Ramsey, late Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Minnesota, was taken up.
A debate ensued as regards the power of the Senate to appoint such a committee, and as to the expediency of doing so. The matter was finally postponed, and the Senate went into Executive session to confirm appointments.
The Senate, yesterday, debated a resolution to allow the Superintendent of the Public Printing and his works and messengers extra compensation; and passed it with a proviso, that hereafter no allowance of any sum beyond the regular compensation, shall be made to any officer of the Senate. It was stated in the course of the discussion, that upwards of $30,000 were voted for extra compensation to the employees of that body, at the close of the last Congress, for the short session.
After an Executive Session, the Senate adjourned.
