Full Text

On Tuesday afternoon the petition of Messrs. Powells and others, the much injured proprietors of the lands lying westward of Connecticut River, including Hinsdale and many other townships, granted by this province and New-Hampshire passed in the Honorable House of representatives. It must give pleasure to every honest man to observe the spirit manifested by every branch of the Legislature on this occasion. We may now depend upon seeing a fair trial of the force in law against such miserable sophistry as this, " the province of the Massachusetts Bay can claim no title to any lands whatsoever, under the deed to Roswell; because the grant to the council of Plymouth was void for the false suggestion on which it was granted, and the proviso therein contained ; as it comprehended lands then possessed by the Dutch. " Vid, Conf. Commentaries, 1767 p. 10.
