MISS. PROF. RHODES SCHOLAR GETS HAMPTON INSTITUTE POST

Hampton, Va., Sept. 25. - A Rhodes scholar, Haven P. Perkins, Long Beach, Miss., has been appointed substitute associate professor of social science at Hampton Institute for the coming academic year.

Three other appointments to the faculty, Mrs. Clara H. Peterson, Arlington, Va., Mohammed K. Alam, Karachi, Pakistan, and James E. Brooks, Newport News, Va. have also been announced by Dr. William H. Martin, acting president of the college.

Perkins, who received the B.A. degree from Williams College was appointed a Rhodes Scholar in 1923 and attended Oxford University where he received the M.A. in 1926. A former assistant and instructor at Harvard University for two years, he later served as instructor at General Theological Seminary in New York City from 1928 to 1934.

For the past 15 years he has worked as an organizer for the United Electrical Workers in St. Louis and Chicago. This past summer he served as a lecturer at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Mrs. Peterson, who has been appointed assistant professor of education, received the B.S. degree from Virginia State College in 1937 and the M.A. from New York University in 1946. She has done other study at Howard, Harvard, Denver and Michigan State Universities and the University of Virginia.

A teacher in Rosenwald High School, Beverlyville, Va., from 1931-38, she then went to Bruton Heights High school, Williamsburg, Va., where she taught from 1938-1942. Following three years as assistant statistician with the department of agriculture in Washington, D. C., she was principal of the Lyles Crouch School in Alexandria for five years and principal of the Charles Houston school also in Alexandria from 1950-59.

She is a member of the Virginia State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, and the Association for Childhood Education International.

Appointed assistant professor of physics, Mr. Alam, received the B.S. from Benares Hindu University in 1951 and the M.S. from the University of Sind, Pakistan, in 1957.

In 1957 he was appointed a research fellow at the High Altitude Observatory in Boulder, Colo., and received the M.S. degree from the University of Colorado in 1959. He was a teaching assistant in physics at the Government College, Hyderabad, Pakistan from 1955 to 1957.
