SKANEATLES, March 24
For a number of days past until yesterday morning considerable number of the infantry and artillery were passing through here to the westward as was conjectured to retake Niagara. Yesterday morning an express came on from Sackett's Harbor, ordering them all to the right-about, on account of an apprehended attack of that place. Gen. Brown went on as far as Auburn himself: this morning he passed through here to the east. Whether an attack is actually expected, or whether it be not some manoeuvre to make people stare, the wisest of us are puzzled to determine. A report reached here yesterday, that the British had evacuated Niagara but it is not credited.
We have been favored with the Albany Register of Tuesday from which the following articles are copied. Com. Adv.
GENEVA, March 23.
Military Manoeuvres. On Sunday Maj. Gen Brown, Cols. Gaine and Reed and about 800 U. States Infantry from Sackett's, Harbor, arrived here, and it was given out that, other troops were on the march which would make the whole force amount to between 2 and 3000 men -who were to proceed to Niagara to commence military operations against the enemy. The troops already arrived remained until early yesterday morning when' they commenced a retrograde march. Gen. Brown returned east the day following his arrival.. Conjectures are various respecting this manoeuvre ; though most people agree that it is a wise one.
