BY THE STEAM-BOAT.
From the Albany Gazette, of Monday.
By several gentlemen from gen. Wilkinson's army, who arrived in this city on Saturday last by way of Plattsburg, we have the important information that the descent on Lower Canada is suspended--the campaign closed, and the armies gone into winter quarters-General Wilkinson's at a place called French Mills, near St. Regis, and gen. Hampton's at Plattsburg. Wilkinson, in his general orders to his army, among other reasons for suspending active operations, mentions gen. Hampton's having withdrawn his army from Chateaugay, by which he was deprived of its assistance and co-operation.
The navigation of the river St. Lawrence was much impeded with floating ice, and Salmon river (down which it was necessary for a part of the army to pass) completely frozen over.
The battle of the 11th is represented to have been most severe, and to have lasted 4 hours. Our loss in killed and wounded, is stated to have exceeded 300--- other accounts say between 4 and 500. That gen. Covington is dead of his wounds. That one captain, whose name is not recollected, and Lieut. Smith of the light artillery, were killed, and Col. Preston, of the 13th regiment (severely) and about 20 other officers wounded.
The report, said to be brought by Col. King, and also mentioned under the Burlington head, respecting the free use of the bayonet in the above action, and especially the conflict for ten minutes, is wholly contradicted by our informants, who add, that the conflicting armies were never nearer, in the course of the action, than half pistol shot.
Gen. Wilkinson's army is said not to exceed 5000 men
