Final Hearing on Steam and Hand Presses Held This Morning.
Senators Harris and Hiscock give a final hearing this morning in the room of the Senate Committee on Finance to the parties interested in the use of steam and hand printing presses in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
Chief Graves, Assistant Chief Sullivan, Mr. Gibson, attorney for the steam press men; Messrs. Kearney, Jordan and Ralston, representing the hand-press printers, and Messrs. De Land and Lichtlighter, who are interested in the subject, were present at the hearing.
Mr. Bell, Chief of the Secret Service, armed with a book filled with counterfeit notes, was the only witness. He testified in regard to the counterfeiting of silver certificates, to which his attention had been called by various banks. The work that was counterfeited most easily was in many instances that done by steam presses.
After the close of the testimony Mr. Ralston and Mr. Graves each summed up the testimony already taken in regard to the relative merits of steam and hand-presses, and the sub-committee will now consider the same before submitting their final report, which will probably be made next week.
