Tilden Talks to the Nation in an Able Letter of Thanks.
And Proclaims the Success of Democracy as the Nation's Salvation!

To the Committee: The following is Mr. Tilden's letter to the committee in behalf of the national democratic committee.

I thank you for the kind expressions of confidence and support throughout the late national campaign.
The result in the administration though in the main satisfactory, the corrupt influences which have been brought to bear in the close of the contest have not been without their effect.
The democratic party has its origin in the efforts of the whole people united to resist the pretensions of the slave power.
The republican party has always been dominated by principles which favor legislation in the interest of particular classes at the expense of the body of the people.
It has become deeply tainted with abuses which grow up during long unchecked power.
The criminal trusts and combinations which have arisen in recent years have filled the minds of the best citizens it contains with despair.
Massachusetts struggling to control the combines in her midst and Illinois putting in the field a national candidate that the republican party contains proportionate share of the wealth culture and intelligence of the country.
I belong to a party that has not lost its conscience.
The charges that have been made in all ages and countries that the democratic party is the party of rum and romanism are false.
It was alleged to be the ally of the American reading night the party that day is now pitted against it.
The conspirators and those who are intriguing to charge the judicial outrage committed to the south turning the government over to the party that I opposed.
