THE BATTLE OF THE DANUBE.

Among all the bloody days which Buonaparte has added to the calendar of slaughter, the 21st and 22d May, will appear the most sanguinary. Of all the battles of modern times, that of the Danube will stand pre-eminent. Napoleon, who for many years has carried conquest in his front, while death and destruction brought up his rear, has at last found a warrior able to arrest him in his course. Like the destructive hurricane, the mad Corsican swept with irresistible impetuosity over kingdoms and states, laying waste every thing in his way, until the Austrian armies arrested him in his career, and as the Andes arrests the whirlwind, made a barrier over which he could not pass. He met this impenetrable phalanx with his accustomed fury, and dreadful has been the shock! The concussion was terrible beyond description. More than fifty thousand men bit the dust. Upstart princes, dukes and lords, were hurled from their elevations, mingled with plebeians, and swept from the face of earth. Human nature shudders in contemplating the carnage which must have taken place. One hundred thousand men prostrate and bleeding on the field of battle! The idea is terrible! But it was necessary. The tyrant must have a check or the world be enslaved. And the Austrian who was in the battle, and who survives,

"Will stand a tip-toe when the day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Ebersdorff.
He that liv'd through those days, and sees old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbour
Then will he strip his sleeve and shew his scars:
Old men forget; yet shall not all forget,
But they'll remember, with advantages
What feats they did that day."
