MR. ALBURTIS,

WHEN I reflect on the progress of infidelity among us, and the present situation of our beloved country under its influence, my heart bleeds at every pore. I say under its influence, because I believe it an incontestible truth that of all the atheists and deists in the United States, a large majority of them are democrats. And since it is known that the private opinions of men govern their practice in every station in which they can be placed; and since Christianity alone can afford sufficient security to society for the integrity and uprightness of its members, by holding them accountable as moral agents; and since it is notorious that no reliance can be had on the oath of those who think themselves born only to promote their own happiness, and accountable to none but themselves for their conduct—I think it highly proper that those who are candidates for any important trust, should unequivocally declare to their fellow-citizens, their religious instead of their political creed, in which they are infinitely more interested. The nature of man is corrupted, prone to evil continually, and political opinions alone, however orthodox, will not preserve the community from falling into all the vices of the anti-christian world. Licentiousness is the greatest enemy Liberty has to contend with, and without the aid of Christianity will effectually be destroyed. In order therefore to secure our Liberty and happiness, we should trust no person with any important business in the state who does not manifest his veneration for the Christian Religion. For my own part, I am determined on all occasions to follow the advice I give:
