Fans Look Forward To
Improvements, Better
Facilities At Park
BY JOEL W. SMITH
The consensus of opinion among
Atlanta baseball fans is that teams
of the Georgia-Alabama Amateur
Baseball League are showing marked
improvement in their weekend tilts
at Harper Field.
Two weeks ago, the Atlanta Panthers
and Atlanta Tigers treated the fans
to a double-header packed with
thrills and suspense from start to
finish, and last weekend, the first
game between the Tigers and Atlanta
Blue Sox was another exciting
"knock-down-drag-out" battle.
IMPROVED PLAY MAY
MEAN LARGER CROWDS
Latest comment among the fans
is that this smart all-around play
will definitely pay big dividends at
the gate, if the other teams in the
loop follow the pattern set by the
Tigers, Panthers and Blue Sox.
The loyal fans who have been
supporting the Georgia-Alabama
League teams each weekend have
also pointed out the need for numerous
improvements and better
sanitary facilities at Harper Field.
The fact is, many fans are at a
loss to understand why the management
has not sensed the need for
improvements on the stands and
playing field.
Earlier this season, the winners
generally capitalized on errors. Now
with most of the teams in tip top
shape, the infield and outfield combinations
are backing up their
pitchers with air-tight fielding,
which points to battles right down
to the wire in the championship
chase.
OUTSTANDING HURLERS
The outstanding pitching performance
in the loop to date was the
sparkling one-hitter carved out by
David Scott, of the Tigers last
weekend. Victor Johnson of the Blue
Sox gave up five hits, three in the
last inning. Then two weeks ago
Richard Phillips of the Panthers and
Ralph Jones of the Tigers hurled
four-hit ball. Phillips won the game,
4-3.
Included among the most consistent
hitters in the loop are James
Greene, Blue Sox; Willie Dudley,
Henry Cotton, LaGrange, Leon
Wyatt, "Bubber" Harper, Floyd
Head, Grady Ross, Tigers, Frank
Redidune, Jimmy Wilson, Panthers.
William Carter, Blue Sox; Floyd Mitchell
and Theodore Stallworth, Athletics.
The new crop of youngsters who
will bear watching are: Richard
Phillips, Panthers, Samuel Cotton,
John Holloway, LaGrange, Robert
Lee, Braves. Harry Hatcher, Pee
Wee Reese, Athletics. James R.
Stroud, Rubin Ross, and Bennie
Williams, Tigers.
