Full Text
The desponding letters passing between the heads of the United States of America and their oracles of civil liberty and self-government, plainly shew what a deplorable state they have bro't themselves to by tearing themselves from the government, consequently the protection of this island. The Dey of Algiers, not contented with taking their ships in a predatory manner, and enslaving the free citizens of America, we confess ourselves not a little curious to see an authentic copy of this ferocious Prince's denunciation of war against an infant state; and yet more, to see the counter declaration (the maiden one since the first existence) of the Congress, the head of the States, against the unexpected enemy, little thought of at the time of their rushing into premature existence. Like many other premature births, it will prove a miscarriage, or never be reared to a robust and adult state. We do not find that their great and good ally thinks them worthy of being invited to make a party of that grand confederation he is now forming on the continent of Europe, which he certainly would not neglect, if he thought them important and consequential enough to merit that attention, or to make any weight in the scale of politics.
