"Our Court has been a good deal surprized to see the Accounts published in the English and other public Papers, of the Meeting between the King's Ships, under the Command of Mons. de Salvert, and those English Men of War commanded by Commodore Buckley, upon the Coast of Guinea; in which some Circumstances are insinuated, very different from what passed upon that Occasion. The King's Ships had been at Anchor in the Road of Anamaboe several Days before the English Ships arrived there; soon after which, the French Commandant sent an Officer to Capt. Buckley, with the Compliments which are customary; upon M. de Salvert's Answer, Capt. Buckley, and some other Officers went on Board his Ship, where he was received with the usual Honours. That the respective Pretensions of the two Nations, with regard to the Trade carried on upon the Coast of Guinea, was talked of, is true; but if it was only in general Terms, and by way of Conversation; and so far from any Menaces having passed on either Side, that they behaved to each other with the greatest Politeness, and perfectly consistent with the strict Union that subsists between the two Crowns. Some Days after M. de Salvert sailed from Anamaboe, after having received on Board the Deputies sent by the Nation of the Fantins to the India Company, and upon whose Account he had prolonged his Stay in the Road."
