Parnassian Spring

The following verses were found among the papers of a young Lady who had been an ornament to her sex, but for an unfortunate attachment formed in the early part of her life.

When a girl, I lov'd a boy,
He was kind, and I was coy,
I was coy and he was kind,
He brought me all that he could find ;
Look'd so neat. and dres'd so smart,
Soon he stole my tender heart.
Smil'd the morn of May so sweet,
Flowrets sprung beneath our feet,
Sought we then the conscious grove,
All was ecstasy and love !
Sweetly danc'd the hours away,
Spare my blushes, ladies, pray !
Now, how chang'd my amorous boy ?
I grew fonder, he more coy ;
O'er the seas he took his way,
And left me with my babe to stay ;
Virtue, peace, and honour fled,
Where shall Bessy lay her head ?
Nymphs, not yet by love undone.
Learn of me false Man to shun ;
Dear deceitful, perjur'd sex,
Hapless Woman born to vex;
Never trust them in a grove,
But when Hymen goes with Love.
