NOTWITHSTANDING the tendency to develop a more feminized fashioning, sports costumes and tailleurs have their very definite place in the mode. The sophisticate who has mastered the art of dressing divides her wardrobe into three distinct classes-- sports and tailleur, afternoon costumes and evening dress.

Ideal for spring from the utilitarian standpoint, at the same time expressing ultra-chic, is the ensemble of tweed or some other equally as sturdy a woolen for the coat and skirt, with harmonized jersey for the blouse.

The ensemble in the picture is just such a patrician type. It makes its appeal to discriminating taste because of fabric superiority and meticulous workmanship rather than that of elaborated detail. It is "rich, not gaudy." Even though it be "as costly as thy purse can buy" it is a wise investment at that, for there is a vast amount of service to be had in a three-piece costume of this sort. The coat may be worn with the ensemble, also it will do duty as a separate spring wrap. The skirt need not always be jersey-topped, for with a fresh lingerie blouse or one of silk crepe or dull satin, pleasing variations are played.

All the niceties demanded by the mode for an ideal business, travel or town-wear ensemble are observed in the tailoring of the model pictured. The coat is the prescribed seven-eighth length, the skirt adheres to the simple seamed-at-the-sides type, while the blouse of fine jersey has a thread of metal running through its weave, which tunes in perfectly with the russet shades of the tweed. Both the belt and the leaf-shaped neckbinding are piped with gold kid, which enlivens the costume to that proper degree which does not cheapen.

An outstanding feature which gives this costume tone is the handsome fox scarf. One of the new interests in spring fashions is the separate neckpiece for both suits and ensembles demand small furs.
