It will be recollected, that, on the 22d of September last, a large sum of money, belonging to Messrs. Beers & Bunnell of this city, was stolen from on board the steam boat, on its passage from Albany. Great exertions have been made, and the untiring vigilance of our police exerted to detect the offender, but without success, until yesterday morning. The young man from whose possession the money was originally taken, came down again yesterday in the steam boat, and his suspicions had settled upon an individual who was now, as formerly, a fellow passenger. For the purpose of apprehending the offender, the steward of the boat was landed some miles above the city, and rode down post haste for an officer. Not finding one readily, the steam boat was kept off and on tacking about between the Fort and Battery to the great astonishment and annoyance of the passengers, who without knowing the reason, began to express their dissatisfaction at the delay in reaching the shore. At length, however, Capt. Wiswall discovered the concerted signal from the wharf, and as he approached it, the steward, accompanied by a police officer, stepped on board arrested a gentleman, and took into possession his trunk, which, with $1598, is now in safe custody by the police authority, and is supposed to contain all, (with the exception of about $300) of the identical money which was stolen from Messrs. Beers & Bunnell.
