FOR THE VIRGINIA ARGUS.
How hard would be Columbia's fate,
Should Russia's aid arrive too late,
To save Old England from the blow,
Aimed at her by her deadly foe!
For France will then rule all the world,
Each monarch from his throne be hurl'd,
Republics into kingdoms turn'd.
And rights of man forever spurn'd!
Sons of Columbia, Britain join,
Let all the world 'gainst France combine
That Britain still may rule the seas,
And e'en with us do what she please.
Let her our seamen press or kill:
Our wish the sooner she'll fulfill;
The sooner break down Gallic pow'r,
Her cash and commerce on us show'r
And titles give to our well-born,
So long from these dear objects torn,
By revolutions direful force,
And independence hated course.
Repentant all should now return,
For reconciliation burn.
And by their well fought battles prove,
With what sincerity they love;
How much they hate that cursed day,
When from allegiance led astray;
They dared resist their Sovereign's will,
Slaughtering his troops at Bunker's-Hill!
The glorious task let them perform
And joining Britons Paris storm;
Shewing how far Columbia goes,
Beyond all France's former foes.
Let Swedes, let Russ, nay all beside,
Leave Britain and from Gallia hide.
Columbia will more glory gain,
She'll conquer France, and humble Spain
Or, duteous to her fainting mother fly,
On her expiring bosom with her die.
