The Detroit Free Press in the following, well hits off the folly of the Administration, to give it no harsher name, in regard to the removal of the gallant Lane, from his post as Governor of Oregon for the cause of being a Democrat, and because of his defence of the gallant volunteers of Indiana from the false charges of cowardice proffered against them. The Free Press says:
There can no longer be a doubt that Gen. Taylor is a very affectionate man. In proof of this, we instance the fact that he has appointed the third defeated Congressman as Governor of Oregon. The first two declined the appointment. The last is Major Gaines, of Kentucky, who was most ingloriously defeated in August. The first two were anti-Mexican war railors, and felt undoubtedly ashamed of the General for removing Gen. Lane, who distinguished himself in Mexico. Gaines has accepted, and it is understood that he would have taken old clothes if he could get nothing better.
Repudiation by the people, of a candidate for office seems to be a passport to favor under the present Administration. -Statesman
