WASHINGTON (P) - President Kennedy announced today he intends to appoint Clarence F. Pautzke, 53, Deputy Commissioner of Fish and Game for Alaska, as Commissioner of the Interior's Department of Fish and Wildlife Service.
Pautzke will succeed Arnie J. Suomela in the $18,500-a-year post.
Pautzke, a native of Auburn, Wash., was a football star while attending the University of Washington.
He is commanding officer of a Naval reserve unit in Alaska and held a similar post in Washington.
Before going to Alaska in May 1960 Pautzke had completed 30 years of employment with the State of Washington. He worked for three years with the State's Fishery Department, 25 years with game and fish work and 3 years in other state jobs.
In 1959 he was a member of the American delegation of fishery specialists who spent a month inspecting Russian fishery laboratories and fishing activities on Kamchatka Peninsula and the nearby Alaska mainland.
He is a former president of the American Fisheries Society.
