WASHINGTON, Oct. 12.—[Special.]—Report of Major Powell, of the geological survey, of the work done by the department of irrigation was made to the secretary of the interior to-day. Upon the field of operations in Idaho the report says that 315 square miles were surveyed on a one-inch scale. In Montana 550 miles were surveyed. One party of surveyors are doing reservoir work around Yellowstone lake. Of the engineering work the report says in the Idaho section the survey of a canal line from Eagle Rock to Pocatello was completed in July. During August an examination was made of the country above Eagle Rock to the forks of the Snake to ascertain the state of settlement and irrigation, and with a view of locating reservoirs in it. A report has not yet been made of these observations.
