Whilst speaking of exchange papers, we have a word to say to our editorial brethren--If an exchange is requested and refused, the paper should be returned to the publisher as if a subscriber had declined to take out the paper forwarded to him; and if after a short exchange either party should be disposed to decline it, the same course should be adopted. We see frequent enquiries among our cotemporaries, why a particular paper has not been received for months? and we contend that an editor is as responsible to his exchange brethren as to his pay subscribers, and should be as tenacious of good faith to the one as to the other.
We are free to acknowledge that the exchange list is an onerous affair to a publisher and probably few but would be glad to reduce its size; but courtesy induces many to act counter to their interest. We exchange with all who ask it, save the abolitionists--with them we hold no communion. We solicit exchanges of none, however desirous we might be to enjoy them; because the Gazette, being amongst the oldest papers in the union, etiquette demands that the application should come from the juniors.
