Mrs. W. J. Shaw and Lt. Comm. William A. Perry were guest speakers on the Midway Park Hour over WJNC Thursday evening using Scouting for Boys and Girls as their theme. Mrs. Shaw, who is in charge of Girl Scouts of Midway Park and Camp Lejeune told that Girl Scouting is "essentially skills consciously taught and intangibles unconsciously caught." She explained that Girl Scouting is the guiding of girls from 7 to 18 years of age through a progressive field of activities to the extent they become sufficiently skillful in performance to be worthy of the proficiency badges given under the 10 program fields.
In telling of the three program levels, Brownie, ages 7 to 10; Intermediate, ages 10 to 14 and Seniors, ages 14 to 18, Mrs. Shaw explained that it is hoped that Camp Lejeune and Midway Park will have a Senior group in the near future. Steps are being taken to provide a qualified leader by the fall. Mrs. Shaw said that these leaders must be certified by N. Y. and must meet rigid requirements.
Lt. Comm. Perry, who is Scout Master for Troop 90 of Camp Lejeune told that "the Boy Scout movement circling the globe boasts some 3,500,000 boys who are banded together in what may be described in this turbulent year of 1950 as the finest example and ultimate in unification, promoting common grounds for peace and survival, and continued ideas for universal friendship and brotherhood. The scope of scouting" Com. Perry said "is unlimited by class, creed, color or political distinction. The movement is non-military, non-political, non-class and inter-denominational. Honor is made the high ideal for boys and the scout laws, on which the movement hinges, have been handed down from days of the knights. The scout laws are based upon moral codes of old, but they are transformed into positive living ideals for the modern boys."
Lt Comm. Perry announced that on Thursday evening Troop 90 voted for their representative to the International Boy Scout Jamboree to be held at Valley Forge, Pa., in June. Harold Regan was selected to attend. Billy King was chosen as alternate, should Troop 90 be permitted two representatives. Bill is unable to go, however, so Mark Raney, Jr., who was third place in the voting, will go with Harold Regan. These boys were selected from the patrol of boys who won highest honors in a four months' troop contest. Their expenses will be paid from money obtained primarily through community projects. Bob Quinn has been selected to represent Troop 20 from Jacksonville, Comm. Perry said. "These boys from both communities have one of the finest thrills awaiting them in their camp-life with potential world-wide friends this summer. Their experiences cannot possibly be evaluated by our monetary system.
In closing his impressive speech Comm Perry said "To all Boy Scouts I should like to say that you occupy an enviable position in your community. Your friends and adults have you earmarked with highest respect. Whatever you do will be first recognized favorably as a Boy Scout. It is your interest and your enthusiasm in doing your duty to help others, in keeping yourself strong, mentally awake and morally straight that keeps the entire world-wide Boy Scout program held in such high regard among the social societies of the world."
