It is not a little singular to us, that so many of our cotemporaries who call their newspapers "Democratic," should be thrusting before their readers such bladderdash as appears from week to week about Mr. J. H. Erwin of Iberville, who chooses to offer himself to the citizens of Iberville as a candidate for the office of Sheriff, without the permission of a miserable caucus of locofocos, who think they have the right to say who shall be Sheriff.
We would like to know what the office of Sheriff of Iberville has to do with the great principles of the Great "Democratic" party of this great nation The organ of East Baton Rouge has the following beautiful paragraph on the subject.
Singular Proceedings.-We perceive by the Iberville Gazette that Mr. Jos. H. Erwin, after having submitted his name. among others, to a nominating convention, has so far forgotten himself as to come before the people as an independent candidate for sheriff.- Baton Rouge Advocate.
"So far forgotten himself?" Yes. The intelligent people of Iberville, will vote for him just because he has the independence to stand before them upon his own merit, without any regard to the croakings of small politicians, whose bowels dilate at the prospect of 'spoils and collapse at the bare thought that anything is to fall from their grasp.
