"LANCASTER, March 9 1811.
This day Mr. Roberts read in his place in senate a very important bill entitled "an act to encourage the constructing of certain great and leading roads within this commonwealth, and the erection of bridges over the Susquehannah at Harrisburg, Northumberland and Columbia." The first section appropriates the sum of $50,000 dollars to be applied as directed in the act, $350,000 dollars, are appropriated to the first turn pike company which shall be incorporated to make a turnpike road from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh, on certain conditions to be performed and sums paid by the stockholders. $200,000 dollars, are appropriated on the same terms to any turnpike company to make a road from Northumberland to Erie. One hundred and fifty shares to be subscribed to the Downingtown, Ephrata and Harrisburg turnpike. $100,000 dollars towards building a bridge over the Susquehannah at Harrisburg. There are some other important provisions in this bill which, if adopted appear admirably calculated to promote the best interests of the State.
