LANSINGBURH. May 24.
Accounts from the N. state, that the British fleet has returned over the lines without having effected any thing but the capture of a few of the trading craft on the lakes. It is stated, however, that the steam boat, which left Plattsburg on Wednesday last, with a number of the officers of the army on board, had not arrived at Whitehall on Saturday, and it was feared there, that she had been taken by one of the enemy's vessels, which might have been left behind for that purpose.
Com. M Donough had not sailed, not having a sufficient number of men to man his squadron.
The army at Plattsburg consists of but 3000 men, the miserable remnant of Wilkinson and Hampton's commands—and it is said that no offensive operations are calculated on in that quarter this year.
