On Monday the 12th of July, Lat. 49, 38. Long. 8. 30, from London, the Harriot Packet, Captain Ronnel, in her passage from New York to Falmouth, was attacked by a Brig Privateer, of 14 six and nine pounders, and about 130 men. The Engagement began about half after Eight in the Evening, and continued 5 Hours with great smartness on both Sides, when the Privateer sheered off to a little distance, but still kept in fight till morning, when half past 3, with grapplings at his yard arms, and a stink pot at his flying jib boom, he again stood for the packet, and being near her, almost ready for boarding, Capt. Ronnel thought proper to sink the mail, and at 4 the engagement was renewed with equal ardor: The sails and rigging of the packet were cut to pieces, her main mast, main top mast, and fore top mast, fore top cross trees, trussel trees, and try sail mast, were wounded, and several shot in her hull: The Captain and two Gentlemen passengers were lightly wounded, one seaman had a ball lodged in his wrist, and one was accidentally blown up with gunpowder. About six, it is thought a lucky shot from the packet did some effectual damage to the privateer, for she immediately sheered off, and made all the sail she could set. Capt. Ronnel arrived safe at Falmouth.
