Candidates for the Mummers Club participated in tryouts held in the English room at 3:40 Thursday, December 17. President Joe Sterling presided at the meeting, instructing the nominees concerning the task confronting them.
Imitations Given
Candidates were required to give imitations of the more popular figures in the movie colony, which characterizations were selected by Sterling. They were also required to sing a song in the manner their "stars" would sing it. Although original in their actions, the would-be Thespians managed to keep their audience entertained.
Bernice Lovejoy, popular songstress over the Juneau Artists program, imitated Jean Harlow, singing "And Then Some." Other students who took part in the trials were Jean Boyer, who impersonated Alice Faye, singing a character song; Enid Jarvis, Mae West; Mary Jean McNaughton, Greta Garbo; Lyman Snow, Eddie Cantor; Howard Jackson, Edward Everett Horton; George Folta, Joe E. Brown; Jake Swanson, Dick Powell. Dean Williams gave a pantomime, showing how an electrician would wire the stage for a production.
Immediately after the initiates had withdrawn from the room, a vote was taken. Lyman Snow, Jean Boyer, Howard Jackson, Enid Jarvis, Mary Jean McNaughton, George Folta, Arnold Swanson, Bernice Lovejoy, and Dean Williams will be initiated at a meeting to be held soon. Doris Freeburger and Nola Mae Seelye will be taken into the club at the same.
At previous tryouts held on Tuesday the same candidates were considered too poor for selection. Each student invited to try for membership in the organization gave a two-minute selection.
