TUCSON, Ariz., Jan. 11. (P) Directors of the Arizona State league will meet here tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock to begin the 1930 baseball season in an official way.
Directors from the five clubs which finished the league last year—Phoenix, Miami, Globe, Bisbee and Tucson—will be represented, while it is understood Jerome, Nogales and Mesa, the latter a member last season for half the schedule, will have envoys.
The meeting will be presided over by President Fred Joyce.
Election of officers, annual reports and discussion of several important matters will be taken up.
Three questions in particular, a decrease in the salary limit from the present $2,350 mark, a six-day playing schedule and the five-man rookie rule, give indications of being bitterly contested.
The rookie clause was put in the State league by-laws last year at a post-season meeting, but it is understood that Bisbee desires to reopen discussion and eliminate it.
William McGovern will represent Tucson.
PHOENIX, Ariz., Jan. 11. (P)—
Fred Joyce, of Tempe, president of the Arizona State league, tonight announced definitely that he would not allow his name to be considered for re-election for the coming season.
"I enjoyed the work last year," Joyce stated, "but in order to properly handle the job, more time is required than I can give and I think I share the confidence of at least four clubs in the loop and have no grievance against Bisbee where many of my rulings have been taken as a deliberate attempt to make things hard for that club."
"I am satisfied in my own mind that there is no foundation for that belief. In fact, a number of my rulings favored the Bisbee club notably the reinstatement of Glen Gabler, who was suspended by Harry Lavender of the Bisbee club, acting as president in my absence."
"Before leaving office, however, I expect to make a number of recommendations to directors of the league which, I am sure, will be of some assistance to my successor. These recommendations will be embodied in the report I will make at the Tucson meeting."
Joyce leaves here early tomorrow by train while it was reported that Globe and Miami directors are making the trip by automobile.
