Scenic Attractions of the Gem Village of the Pemigewasset Valley
The little village of North Woodstock is most beautifully situated in the heart of the Pemigewasset Valley, twenty-five miles north of Plymouth and easy of access from Boston. The breezes that continually sweep down from the surrounding mountains make the town a rare retreat from the heat of the city, while most excellent water is supplied from streams on the neighboring hills.
That the points of interest about North Woodstock are numerous and that the various mountain climbs to be taken in its vicinity are of a fascinating character, is made evident by the fact that this resort was chosen as the headquarters of the Appalachian Mountain Club during their field meeting this season. Among these are Agassiz Basin, Mountainside, the Flume, Pinnacle, Pollard Springs, Jackman Falls, Mounts Moosilauke, Cilley, Flume, and several others.
The drives in the vicinity of the town are many and of a delightful nature. Besides a number of shorter ones, those to the Profile and Echo Lakes, Franconia and Bethlehem, Mill River Falls, Hubbard's Gorge and Mirror Lake in West Thornton, Walker's Ice Cave and West Campton afford a succession of attractive and beautiful bits of scenery. Trout fishing is also excellent in several of the streams near by.
The largest hotel in the village is the Deer Park, which accommodates two hundred guests and is open from June to October. It is situated about seventy-five rods from the railroad station, on a high plateau, and commands an extensive view on every side. From the piazzas which surround the house may be seen Mounts Cannon, Lafayette, Lincoln, Haystack, Liberty, Flume, Potash, Hancock, Loon, Russell, Moosilauke, Kinsman, and countless others. The house was built in 1886 and since that time has received many improvements. The office, halls and dining-room are finished in oak, while at one end of the latter are three large plate-glass windows, through which a surpassing view is obtained. The office and side parlors contain huge fireplaces, while the first and second floors are heated by steam. The house is lighted by gas. The table and service are both of a high order and guests of this hotel are certain to receive satisfaction at the hands of their hospitable landlord, Mr. J. R. Elliott.
The Alpine Hotel, under the proprietorship of Mr. James H. Batchelder, was first opened August 20, 1892, and since that time has been a very popular summer resort. It lies on a high elevation and looks out upon the entire Franconia Range and the mountains bordering the valley. The broad piazzas which surround the house afford a delightful opportunity to enjoy the landscape. The grounds are extensive and the table excellent, while all the up-to-date amusements are furnished.
The Fairview is situated one and a half miles south of the North Woodstock station and at a short distance from Fairview station. Its scenery is varied and beautiful, while its equipments are of the most modern and satisfactory kind. The proprietor of this hotel, Mr. A. W. Sawyer, is also manager of the Mountain Park House

which is at a short distance from the Fair View and accommodates forty guests. It is situated at the base of Mount Russell in the midst of a beautiful grove of maple and commands an excellent view.
The Three Rivers House is a recently built hotel of seventeen rooms with new baths and other improvements situated near the junction of the three branches of the Pemigewasset and convenient to the "summits" and other attractions. H. E. Gordon is the proprietor.
