THE U. G. R. R.—A poor black man, tired of working for a master, concluded to come North and set up for himself. One day last week he secreted himself on a schooner at Norfolk, and, eluding detection during the voyage, slipped ashore in New-York on Friday night without a cent in his pocket. Necessity drove him to the Fourth Ward Police Station, where he obtained lodgings. While there a policeman, by some means, possessed himself of the man's history, and took him on Saturday to Deputy Carpenter, who ordered him to be taken to Essex Market Police Court. There, it seems, he was temporarily committed on a charge of being drunk and disorderly, and the officer went off to take measures for securing his rendition to Slavery, engaging to be back at a certain hour, but without stating his intentions, or notifying the magistrate that the prisoner was a fugitive slave. Soon after two well-known lawyers appeared in court, and demanded to see the prisoner. The man was brought out, and an examination asked for. The complainant had not arrived; there was no affidavit or any charge, and the discharge of the prisoner was made. The Magistrate asked the poor fellow, who looked dreadfully downcast, his name. The man gave it. 'Where did you come from?' Just then the lawyers moved their lips, but no sound was heard. 'New-Hampshire,' said the fugitive, his face lighting up with new life. 'You may go,' said the magistrate with a laugh, and a minute after his client and counsel were on their way up town. Ten minutes after the policeman came in, but did not find his game.
