"History of the Valley."
The undersigned has devoted much time and pains in revising, correcting, improving, and extending to the present period, the "History of the Valley." In fact, the second edition, when completed, will be far superior, in every point, to the first.
It is deemed unnecessary at this time, to refer to the contents of this book. Suffice it to say, that it is precisely what its name imports, a history of the Valley of Virginia, from the period of its settlement; a correct detail of those thrilling and interesting events and incidents that are, or at least ought to be, familiar to all.
Many testimonials, from gentlemen of known and acknowledged respectability and high standing might here be adduced to prove the value and importance of the work ;but the undersigned prefers testing it by a much more satisfactory way ;-let the public judge for themselves.
I have had repeated and urgent calls, from various quarters to come out with the work: but not being able, from the infirmities of age, to see the people personally upon the subject, and not having the pecuniary means to publish it I have been unable to do so, as much as I desire to issue it.
My object now is, first, to ascertain, as far as possible, the extent of patronage that can be obtained ; and in the second place. if sufficient to justify its publication, to make some arrangement to raise the funds necessary to purchase paper, &c, for its publication. it is hoped that no obstacle may present the success of the enterprise.
Respectfully,
SAMUEL KERCHEVAL
