The Currency Question.
Brazos Pilot.
The great fault we have to find with Greenback speakers and writers on the subject of the currency is their disingenuous course toward the Democratic party, and unfairness in presenting their own views. Without professing to be entirely free from partisan bias, we hold that in an argument from the stump or through the press, the disputant owes it to the people whom he undertakes to enlighten and guide, to exercise some degree of fairness and candor in presenting his views and the opinions and doctrines of the opposing party. In this particular our Greenback friends are sadly deficient. For instance, it is an unquestioned fact that the Greenback party has within the last two years made a radical and essential change in regard to the currency question. At that time the idea inculcated by "Brick Pomeroy" of issuing an indefinite amount of irredeemable fiat paper money with which the funded debt of the government was to be paid off forthwith, regardless of the wishes of the bondholders and the contract of the government to discharge the debt in coin, was the universally received doctrine of the Greenback party. This doctrine was fulminated by General Hamman all over the state of Texas in his last canvass for governor, and his arguments to show the benefits to be derived from irredeemable paper money and that the bondholder ought to submit to the sacrifice, was ingenious if not logical and convincing. We find nothing of this doctrine in their national or state platform adopted for the present campaign. There was nothing of it in the Weaver resolutions introduced during the last session of congress and voted for by every Greenback member of the lower house. There is nothing in General Weaver's letter accepting the nomination for the presidency that has even a squinting toward this doctrine. In fact the platforms, the resolutions and the letter of acceptance all inculcate a different doctrine.
