DES MOINES, Jan. 11.—J. S. Clarkson may be the next United States senator from Iowa. The rapid solidification of the strength of the candidates now in the field indicates a prolonged contest and a probability that it will be necessary to go outside of the present list to secure a man who can command a majority of the votes in the Republican caucus. Friends of Clarkson are quietly working up a feeling in his favor with a view to announcing his name at the right time. If Clarkson is elected it must be by the anti-Gear men, as Mr. Clarkson's influence and that of his brother, R. P. Clarkson, editor of The State Register, has all along been against the congressman from the First district. Gear and the Clarksons have not pulled together for a long time and the difference between them grew very pronounced early in 1892. Gear was assistant secretary of the treasury under the Harrison administration and along with the other Federal office-holders was exerting his influence for the renomination of Harrison while the Clarksons favored Blaine.
