NEWPORT. November 2.

The following Paragraph was taken from the New-York Mercury of the 19th ult.

"A certain John Hull, we hear, has been trying to make a voyage; by purchasing a sloop from a gentleman in this city: a quantity of rum of another; bargaining for a parcel of salt; proposed to another house, to give them a Bill on Archibald M'Call, Esq: of Philadelphia, said to be accepted by him. He had really gone so far, as to ship his Master, Mate and People, and to receive ten Hogsheads of Rum on board: had appointed several different days to pay the Money for the Sloop: And last Thursday Morning he told a person in town, that he was just then going down with the Cash: in which time he thought proper to play least in sight. For it is more than probable, he would, if he had appeared, been made a Freeman of--as the Post that morning (Thursday) brought very good advice that he was a vile Impostor; as such he may be known: is a Person of five Feet, eight or nine Inches high, supposed to be 24 or 25 years of Age, pretty corpulent, otherwise slenderly made, appears to be dropsical; says he is a Son of one Col. Hall, in Maryland, that he commanded the Shirley Snow, and Royal George Privateers, out of Providence, in the late War."

The abovementioned John Hull made his appearance in this Town the beginning of last Week, and proposed purchasing a Vessel of a Merchant here, and said he wanted to buy a quantity of salt, and other Merchandize, which he insisted upon having very cheap, as he had the Cash ready to pay immediately; but a gentleman's observing that he answered the above description, he was charged with being the person, which he denied; but the next day, finding he was discovered, tho't proper to abscond.--The Publick are desired to keep a good Look out for so notorious an Impostor.
