It Was Fun Last Night

It was fun last night, but oh this morning! Richard Stofflett, '20, 1331 Washtenaw Ave., Ann Arbor, and Helen Jeanne Neuberg, 19, Jefferson Apts., Ann Arbor, both University of Michigan students, went for a joyride Monday night—in a police cruiser. Today they're in jail.

Ann Arbor city police received a call about 11 p.m. Monday that a disorderly person was creating a disturbance in the Jefferson Apartments. Investigating, officers found no such person at that place so went back to their car. But there wasn't any police car—it was gone, siren, lights and all the rest.

Ypsilanti police were notified to be on the lookout for the car. Officers Kenneth Robinson and Charles B. Knapp started a search and saw the car going north on Perrin St. They lost sight of it but soon found it abandoned near the Ypsilanti Fire Department.

The two University students were arrested near where the car had been stolen. They confessed having made a false phone call concerning the disorderly person and then having driven to Ypsilanti in the police car. They said they abandoned it when they found they were being chased by police, and returned to Ann Arbor by taxi.

Stofflett had a gun and during the ride had been accidentally shot in the hand. Today both of them are in jail until they can furnish either a $500 cash or $1,000 property bond.

They were brought into Judge Jay H. Payne's justice court this morning charged with unlawfully driving away an automobile. They were bound over to Judge George W. Sample's circuit court. The final straw—Judge Sample is out of the city for several days holding court in Saginaw.
