TO THE BIRD OF SPRING.

HAIL lovely bird of spring
Blest songster hail!
Thy notes, upborne on zephyr's wing
Come floating to the vale
Sweet notes! to love and friendship dear
Thrice welcome to my ravished ear
Hail, lovely warbler, hail.

To me thine artless strains,
More joy impart
Than pipes, and harps, of rural swains
That boast their master's art;
In honest, unaffected tone,
Thine boasts simplicity alone
And captivate the heart.

Thine hours roll on in bliss
Joy tunes thy strings
Man knows no happiness like this
On rash Ambition's wings,
From youth to age he madly soars;
Nor gains, at last those peaceful shores.
Where sweet contentment springs.

Near to my cot repair
Sweet bird of spring
Here build: here watch thy hopeful care;
Here teach thy young to sing
Each smiling morn, in humbler lays,
Shall fond Maria chant thy praise,
And hail thee, bird of spring.
