Well, sir, how'd you like to have your house on fire, the fire department there, hose strung, but the most vital thing of all lacking-- water?
And it could be your house or your property as well as anyone else's. These thoughts were suggested yesterday when the department was called out twice and Mayor Welch, instead of following the fire truck, drove around town to see if garden hoses were being turned off... He was surprised and dismayed at the thoughtlessness of folks who forgot this simple rule - when the siren rings, shut off your garden hose AT ONCE.
One fire, about 5 p. m., was in a field at the east side of town near Claude Sollers' residence. But for the fact that the bolt struck in some comparatively green grass, a serious conflagration very likely would have resulted as there was a high wind and the flames would have been driven into town.
The other fire was at about 9 a. m. at the Willis King place north of the sawmill where trash was being burned. This fire, it was learned by the fire chief, did not get out of control, but someone apparently was afraid it might, and turned in an alarm.
Mr. Welch took a water pressure reading at the time of these alarms and found the pressure too low for effective fire fighting. He appeals to the citizens to be thoughtful and cooperative in this matter. "If your house was on fire, you'd want the other fellow to turn off his garden hose, wouldn't you," said the mayor. Then you should do the same for him."
Which, in other words means a simple practice of the Golden Rule.
