Extract of a letter from Dominica, June 25.
In the course of the present month we have been favoured with a visit of our chief Governor General Melville, and what rendered his company more agreeable, he forwarded and put the finishing hand to the bill for holding courts in this island, which had been delayed many months by the Council. Also during his Excellency’s stay arrived here our new Lieutenant Governor, Col. Young, in whom we flatter ourselves, we have a Gentleman, formed to reduce that violence of party which has so long perplexed this place. Lately died here, Major St. George; as also Col. Parry, who lately arrived from England. Two brigs from South-Carolina to this place, have had one 50, the other 55 days passage. Provisions, as well Irish as from North-America, are extremely plenty; and the French actually bring fine flour from Guadaloupe to us; and it is not to be wondered at that Philadelphia soap will not sell in the West-Indies, when the French introduce good Castile soap for 70s. per cwt. Two small vessels were lately confiscated here; one from Antigua, for importing loaf sugar, the other for importing gin from St. Eustatia. There are now 52 sail of vessels in our road, near 20 of which are taking in sugars, and are from 300 to 800 tons. It is said sugars are lower by 15 per cent. this year than last, owing to the great crop in Guadaloupe; and the quantity of cotton at market is immense.
