Cop Held Head Downward Removes Woman and Son from Fire.
NEW YORK, July 31.—Swinging like a pendulum, with two men holding him suspended head downward, William Heines, a rookie policeman, yesterday morning rescued a woman and her son, 14, after they were trapped by flames on the fourth floor of the building in which they lived.
Heines was swung by the men from across a court and ordered the woman to grasp him around the neck as he came within her reach. She was then pulled to safety when the policeman and burden swung back to the fire escape of the opposite building. The boy was rescued the same way.
Another tenant, frightened by smoke and flames, jumped to the yard, a distance of 5 feet, and was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. Firemen rescued four others who could not reach the street by taking them down ladders. The three upper floors of the building were destroyed.
