How the Ocean Thundered at Cape May. [Cape May Cor. Philadelphia Times ]

Amid all this scene of destruction and confusion the grandest, the most awful spectacle was the ocean itself. There were no regular troughs and crests, but now here, now there, a huge mountain of water would rise, and, its heights all ragged with foam and spray, like an avenging monster it would rush forward, lashing the foamy beach relentlessly and sending its waters far among the cottages of the settlement. It seemed as if each new mountain which reared its head was more sublime and awe-inspiring than any that had come before. The roar of the surf and the pounding of the huge crests against each other was deafening. Occasionally a gust of wind, more fierce than the rest, would catch an isolated billow and carry it, like a waterspout, far inland.
