What is a "Breckinridge Democrat?"
Some of our Democratic friends misunderstand the use of this term. It is not used for those who voted for him, nor is it an intimation that such are with the Rebels openly as he is. The Rebels are mostly Breckinridge men, it is true-but many of them voted for Bell or Douglas-none of them for Lincoln. Breckinridge voters-like Butler, Dickinson, Johnson, &c.-are true Union men, and go for Abolition as a military policy.
By Breckinridge Democrats is intended those who conspired with him to defraud Douglas out of the nomination, and split the party, so as to ensure Lincoln's election, as an excuse for Rebellion. And it means also those who take the course he did while he remained in the U.S. Senate, where he took the oath as a Union man, and yet denounced as "unconstitutional" every measure deemed necessary by the Government to put down the Rebellion!
Men who talk and act as the hypocrite Breckinridge did in Senate-though neither hypocrites nor Rebels-must certainly be "Breckinridge Democrats," and will be so styled until they cease doing as Breckinridge did.
