On Saturday of last week, Mrs. Dr. Reuben King, of this city, reached her seventy-seventh milestone on life's journey. Her children had determined to surprise her, and came in bringing their baskets of good things, until a feast was spread fit for a king. All of her children were present, with the exception of Mrs. Frank Reed, of Indianapolis. It was very much regretted that Mr. and Mrs. Reed could not be present. Mrs. King was the recipient of many beautiful presents, and all enjoyed themselves immensely.
Mrs. King's health has been very poor the past winter, but as the warm days of spring arrive it is to be hoped she will gain in health and strength. She is one of our most highly respected mothers and Oregon has many noble mothers, and is loved by neighbors and friends. For years she was an active worker in the church, Sabbath school and temperance cause, until her age and failing health prevented her from continuing in this beloved work, but she has learned that: "They also serve who only stand and wait!" Although she cannot meet with those engaged in the work she loves, yet she gives them her earnest support and prayers.
On this, her 77th birthday, Mrs. King felt very happy that so many of her children and grand-children, and two of her great grand-children could be present.
Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Graham, and three children, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. King and three children, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smallwood, Mr. and Mrs. David Smallwood, Mr. and Mrs. John Iond and three children, Mr. and Mrs. Will Smallwood and child, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Watt and child, Mr. and Mrs. Dolph Ware, Miss Anna and James Thuma. Thus there were present five children, eleven grand-children and two great grand-children.
All left feeling they had spent a very happy day and wishing Mrs. King many more happy birthdays.
