Swedish Colony In Illinois.—There is in Henry county, Illinois, a colony of Swedes, living under an association. The Burlington Hawkeye says of them: "The pioneer of the colony made a selection of land for the settlement, in the southwestern township of Henry county, in the summer of 1846. In the course of the same year, about eight hundred Swedes bade adieu to their native land, to find, in America, 'freedom to worship God.' They were from the middling and poorer classes of society. Forty were from the iron mines of Sweden. They adopted the system of a community of goods, not as has been said, upon the plan of Fourierism, of which they knew nothing, but in order that they might keep together, and especially that they might help the poor. They supposed that the difficulties of their situation authorized their acting upon a principle which was reduced to practice in the first ages of Christianity. Whether it will work successfully or not in their case, time alone will decide. The Swedes have experienced the usual trials incident to the settlement of a new country by foreigners. Their faith and patience have been tried by the general prevalence of sickness, by the disappointment of some, and by the death of many whom they have loved. About one hundred of them have finished their pilgrimage on earth. Since their settlement in Henry county, they have spent about two thousand dollars for medicine and medical attendance."
